Buffett declared that he intended to give over 80 per cent of his fortune to charitable causes. He increased the percentage to 99.9% in 2020. The principal beneficiary was the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation--created by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his then wife Melinda, which was primarily concentrated on global issues such as education and health; Bill and Buffett were in close relationship since the beginning of the 1990s. The three Buffett children and the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation (named after his wife) were among those that received donations. They were focused on reproductive rights for women, funded college scholarships, and additional charities. In 2010, Buffett and the Gateses came up with the Giving Pledge, an invitation to wealthy people to give the bulk of their fortunes to charities.
